ACT Summer Day Program 2014

This summer, we are offering four two-week sessions of fun and exciting theatrical and musical adventures. Each session, we will rehearse scene and song selections from Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark KIDS and perform them on the final Friday afternoon at 4 PM. Classes in movement, voice, acting and theatre games will fill out each day.

This summer, ACT has changed the location of the summer day program, and it will be at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Belmont. The program will be held in the church's beautiful function hall, which includes a stage, piano and windows, as well as a separate rehearsal room with another piano.

As always, you may register for multiple sessions and will have a fresh, new experience each time! Each session will have a special theme. Check out the descriptions below.

A few important details:

• ACT's Summer Day Program will run for four two-week sessions in 2014. You can sign up for as many sessions as you want.
• The day runs from 9 AM to 4 PM.
• There is no Extended Day Care available this year.
• Multiple session and sibling discounts are available:
  • $550 for the first session
  • $500 for the second session or second child
  • $450 for each additional session or child
• A 50% deposit is due at the time of registration in order to hold a camper's spot. Payment in full or arrangements for scholarship must be made prior to June 1st.
• Deposits are refundable minus a $25 withdrawal fee prior to June 1st. No refunds will be given after June 1st.

Session One: Playwriting

Along with rehearsing scenes and music for The Magic Tree House, time will be scheduled for actors to focus on writing their own scenes, which can be used in the production. The group will work closely with staff to create characters, and topics, as well as plan out a story line for their own 5-10 minute scenes.

Session Two: Mask Making

Actors will design and create their own masks based on characters and events in The Magic Tree House Dinosaurs Before Dark. Kids will learn about the art of mask creation, which dates back to ancient Greece, and how to portray emotion through the use of certain materials.

Session Three: Improv

Actors will learn the basics behind improvisation for the theatre: totally unscripted and completely unrehearsed! Time will be scheduled each day for actors to delve into their imaginations, creating scenes and characters they may or may not want to reference in their performance of The Magic Tree House.

Session Four: Theatre and Movement

How one moves on stage, and relates to the space around them is a skill every actor needs. In this camp session, actors will spend time each day focusing on their space, and how their Magic Tree House character could move on stage. Using time honored techniques perfected by theatre practitioner Michael Chekhov, actors will learn about imagination based movement, and the art of gesture. The group will also explore the Laban Technique focusing on shape, effort, and the actor within the space.
